Advanced Placement Exams

Butte College awards credit for successful completion of Advance Placement (AP), College Level Examination Program (CLEP), and International Baccalaureate (IB) exams.

Students must submit official score reports to Admissions and Records. Credit awarded may be substituted for coursework applicable to degree or certificate and also may be used to transfer to four-year colleges and universities (may be subject to limitations imposed by those institutions).

Advanced Placement (AP)

AP exams are taken each May at participating high schools.

By taking an AP course in high school and earning a qualifying score on the related AP exam, you may skip introductory courses, receive advanced placement, receive college credit, and save on college expenses. Visit the College Board to learn more about AP exams.

College Level Exam Program (CLEP)

CLEP is a group of standardized tests that assess college-level knowledge in several subject areas. 

Many colleges grant credit to students who meet their minimum qualifying score. The tests are useful for students who have obtained knowledge outside the classroom, such as through independent study, job experience, or cultural interaction. CLEP also offers international and home-schooled students the opportunity to demonstrate their proficiency in subject areas and bypass undergraduate coursework.
